F1 OPT tax residency (changed from J-1)
I am an international student currently on OPT with a f-1 visa. I started coming to the US in sep 2007 with J-1 status for one year, then subsequently completed a 4-year undergrad degree with F-1 status.

I know that F-1 holder will be considered as non-resident for tax purposes for 5 years. I am in my 5th year of my f-1 visa now. Given that I previously was on J-1 for one year, will this year considered as a NR?

The one year under the J-1 DOES count against the 5-year F-1 period, so your last year as a non-resident alien wasx 2011.

For 2012, you will file as a resident alien, filing Form 1040/1040A/1040EZ AND you can qualify to claim the education credits such as Lifetime Learning and American Opportunity Credits.
