One of the most important things is to control your own emotions. Stress will flow from you to your dog. I have seen people worry their dog sick. Anther very important thing is to give you dog the proper leadership. You need to give the dog the same ''all's well, I am in charge'' as a good parent gives a child. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at Raising Your Dog with the Monks of New Skete For more on being top dog, see Establishing and Keeping Alpha Position

If you haven't done obedience training with the older dog, now would be a good time as a way of giving it the attention it needs now to reassure it it is still an important member of the pack to you.

Let the older dog set the boundaries on how much attention it wants from the puppy. It should still enjoy playing with a puppy, but will resent having one move in. I don't have an answer to that one. The funny part is that our dogs reject having a new dog move in, but love temporary visitors. They must be able to read our emotions and know it is different.
