    Could I be pregnant?
I've been having unprotected sex with my boyfriend.

    Here are my symptoms:
    • Swollen, tender breast
    • Lower back pain
    • Lower stomach/pelvic cramping

I thought it was just my period and/or my ovarian cysts acting up, as these were similar to typical symptoms I've been having, but when my period didn't come, I began to worry. I took an at-home pregnancy test, which was negative.

The symptoms are still here and my period hasn't started.

Could the pregnancy test have been wrong or is there another reason?

Diagnosis of pregnancy cannot be made with symptoms alone. This could be caused by the cysts.

How late is your period? Are you using first morning urine when testing?

I thought about it just being the cysts, but I wasn't sure if tenderness of the breasts could be caused by my cysts.

I'm not entirely sure when my period is, because it's very irregular, but I always know when I'm about to start by the symptoms, and it usually comes within a couple days of the symptoms starting, but it hasn't yet, and it's been about two weeks.

I didn't use my first morning's urine; it was about 10pm when I took the test.

The hormone fluctuations that come with some cysts can cause symptoms as you are having.

Also, it is important to use first morning urine as that is when the concentration of the pregnancy hormone called hCG is the highest. Using urine later than first morning can cause false negatives.

I took the test on Sunday.

Would tomorrow morning be too early to take another test to see? Do you think I should wait until next Sunday?

It would probably be best to wait until next Sunday for a more accurate result.

    Thank you.
Do you recommend a number of home pregnancy tests one should take to be sure the result is accurate? Or is 1-2 enough?

    Sorry for all the questions.

One or two is enough if you get a positive. If you get a negative it's best to just wait until your next expected period but to treat yourself as if you are pregnant while you wait.
