Temp outside is rangeing between 34 day and 24 night and heat is set to 70 and it goes into aux heat at times of operation but it does not shut off and the outdoor unit is got frost on it its like it is not defrosting or is this normal and if it is not what could be the problem had 3 lbs of freon put in in December 2012

You have a refrigerant leak. This leak needs to be found & repaired.

Had a feeling of that but it at least keeps our home warm at a steady 70 degrees and with just adding freon and register reading 86 when all was done felt maybe it was something else like the stat

Three pounds is a significant amount of refrigerant. Naturally this presumes the system is now properly charged. Most manufacturers suggest if a low refrigerant condition is suspected, not to add refrigerant in the heating mode. If refrigerant must be added when temperatures are too cold to operate the equipment in cooling, any remaining refrigerant should be pumped out, the leak found & repaired, then the correct amount of refrigerant should be weighed in. Charging a system in the heating mode based on temperatures & pressures is a guessing game & the vast majority of the time results in an incorrect amount of refirgerant being added.

Thank you for your feed back a certified tech is the one who did the work on December, 3rd 2012 and it was 43 outside, will run this by them and see what they have to say.

I will keep you up to date when they get out here, i posted unit would not shut off and i meant the fan on the airhandler only when it went to aux heat the heat pump outdoor would shut off and come back on but it did not defrost due to 22 degreee weather now that it has warmed up it is defrosted and it is working more efficiently but still going to make sure there is no leak, and if there is have it fixed.

Tech came out today and said we have leak for sure now he put our system in emergency heat and left and said they would call for appointment to do leak search and about an hour after he left nothing was happening with furnace so turned it up to see if it worked and the them heat was blowing cold air and the temp inside kept going down so called emergency # and placed system back in heat mode and now it is warming up again, now what is the real prblem for this to be happening now. Getting frustrated, please help

Heat pump tech came out today and said we have to do aleak test and placed our unit in emergency heat mode and about a hour after he left nothing was happening with the furnace so turned it up to see if it was going to work and it started blowing real cold air and the indoor temp kept getting lower when it is set to 70 degrees it got down to 67 degrees and I switched it back to heat and now it is warming the house again, why would the emergency heat blow cold air if it has nothing to do with the freon.

I have a split system coleman and if the three white wires that link the heatpump, airhandler and tstat are disconnected could this give you a low refrigerant reading ? THEY ARE TO BE CONNECTED Please help

You can only get an accurate reading of the refrigerant pressures when the system is running. Im not sure I understand exactly what you are asking. Three white wires is strange, as is "THEY ARE TO BE CONNECTED". More info would help.

the white wires run to the airhandler # one is from the coleman heatpump model # HP024X1321A for return relay, defrost mode, # two is from the thermostat 7 day programmable honeywell vision pro TH8000 series , and # 3 is from the airhandler SERIAL # W0G660433 for aux and emergency heat this is a coleman split system and the wiring diagram in the airhandler shows they are to be connected when tech called he said he disconnected them to monitor accuracy of the heat pump well if those wires do all they do how accuate is the reading he received about the freon level, or does this have nothing to do with the freon accuracy.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS tech says leak at service port that when installed was not sealed right that we have had a leak for 6 yrs and now that he added more freon in Dec the leak is big and that our TXV is not working properly it makes a loud squelling noise on start up and has since day one we called and called and asked the installer about the sound it was making, to only here I don't know what that noise is, to oh that's normal, so there is the diagnosis which is a 900.00 repair, Its nice you pay almost 10,000.00 for your split system and installation to find out they did it wrong and it would be costly to you.

The only way to accurately charge a heat pump in the heat mode is to remove all of the refrigerant, vacuum the system, & weigh the charge in per factory spec. no more, no less. Your TXV may not be acting right because the system is over charged. Ran into one myself a couple of weeks ago. Factory charge 6#,5oz.-- Refrigerant recovered: 8#,2oz.
