I have a aprox 3 month old pit puppy , the day after I got her we took her straight to the vet cause the night before she vomited spaghetti like worms, she tested positive for hook, and round worms, and also parvo, we left her there for 24 hours of IV fluids and was also given some meds, did no more throwing up or diarea and was sent home next day, we had her on anitbiotics for 10 days and took her back and she received her first round of shots and de wormer, this was about 2 weeks ago, last couple of days she has been scooting her bottom on ground and had small amounts of blood in stool ( normal) I called my vet and they said it was normal for that and that it was too soon to treat again for the worms and that as long as she is eating and drinking and acting OK , that she was sure it was just still the worms. Well today she vomited some more of the round worms and now won't eat or drink , her gums are still pink but she doesn't seem like herself tonight, should I be worried about parvo again, or could this all still be the worms. I'm worried and hate to wait till morning to talk to my vet. Kathy

Parvo is a lot like the chicken pox virus for humans, in that once you get it, you're body creates an immunity to it. If she had a confirmed case of parvo that she survived, then it's unlikely that this is parvo again.

I am a bit shocked that the vet gave her shots only 10 days after being treated for parvo.

Tapeworms are what usually causes a dog to scoot. If it is tapeworms you should be able to see them in the feces.

It's possible that her anal sac is engorged. If that's the case, it will need to be expressed, and that's best done by your vet.

If she's not drinking, and you're worried about dehydration, it's okay to give her pedialyte or gatorade. Both have electrolytes that will help keep her hydrated, and both are perfectly safe for dogs.

I would recommend you take her to the vet first thing tomorrow morning, sadly we can only guess on this site, we can't diagnose. The information I've posted here is a guess based on what you wrote, and by no means a diagnosis of your dog.

Vet check went pretty good, she had a stool on floor while there which vet was actually happy about lol so she could test it, she does still have worms and was not due for next de worming till the 27th but vet went ahead with another type of de wormer Drontal , she said that she will have very very nasty stools after this but should be feeling better by tomorrow, well she had 3 bad ones , (let me know every time to go outside) slept for a while and is now eating and drinking and wanting to play! Vet also did say that she in no way felt that she could get parvo again, that she should be immune to it now! Praise God for that ! She gets the same pill again in 3 weeks but goes back to vet next week , I absolutely love my vet she is the best and I know she truly loves my babies like I do. Thanks for your response it is nap time for this momma.

Dogs scoot did to an anal glad problem. If she's had diarrhea or soft stool, than she hasn't been able to express them normally.

Yes tell me how to post pictures I would love to post one of her, she expelled a TON of worms yesterday, and has had no desire to eat or drink, vet said her tummy is just not feeling well and this should pass , I am still worried and was giving her some pedelite to keep electrolytes up , and she did drink water on her own last night. I read that the drontal can make them loose appitite , I am keeping a close eye on her. Thank you for your additional help, I love this baby so much and just want the best for her. She is just one of my 4 legged babies !

Update... She just woke up and was wanting to give me kisses, she also ate a few bites of food! I think we are on road of looking and feeling better! I had to say "wanting" to give me kisses cause I would let her lick my face, My vet told me that since she was so infested with worms that if she by chance had any eggs on her tongue that they could transfer to me... yuck!! So sorry Miya but no licking/kisses right now..!

She's adorable Mommak. What a sweetheart. Give the meds time to work. These meds can really reek havoc on a puppy, so losing her appetite isn't really unexpected. But, having worms would make her feel worse, so it's a necessary evil.

Just keep up the treatment, and if you have any concerns, call your vet right away.

I'm sure you'll be given the clear to get puppy kisses very soon. :)

Alty wanted me to post my story that I sent to her, I do want to ad that the money I paid for her in beginning I made the breeder give back to me to help with vet bill I normally don't pay for dogs from this type of breeder but my heart went out to Miya and I felt I just had to save her...

I found an ad on craigs list and that is how we got her, when we got to the house and went to the back yard where the puppies and adult dogs were, I got this bad feeling that maybe we should keep looking somewhere else as I was worried how healthy the pups would be, the "back yard breeder" as I call her showed me this little tiny girl puppy that had a face that just melted my heart ( I had told her on phone I wanted a female) It was instant love and as I looked around the yard and noticed that she had 2 adult females , a 6 month old female, 2 adult males and 8 puppies I realized I had to get her out of there, we brought her home and she played a little but just didn't seem active like a puppy should , that night she threw up what looked like water and about 5 round worm, we took her to vet very next morning to get her first check up and talk about the worms ( which I took in , in a bag) vet was concerned when I told her the conditions from which she came and recommend a parvo test and I of course said yes, it came back positive and I just lost it, we left her there for over night IV and meds , vet said she had a good chance since we caught it early on, and as you know she made it through, we continued with antibiotic for the 10 days and took back for a re check , she had been the most playful pup very happy girl until the other day when all this started , I did call the lady I got her from and gave her an earful, I told her that all the pups needed to be tested for parvo and that they were all very possibly infested with worms like Miya , she de wormed them herself she said and gave her own parvo shot she got from vet supply store here in Wichita. I have no idea what happened to rest of litter, I had also told her she was in violation by having that many adult dogs without a kennel license and that she needed to STOP her back yard breeding. So that is my story with little Miya, she has been through a lot for just being a baby , I love her so much and will do everything I can to get her through this. I'm glad you posted this. I would also urge you to post the picture of her wormy poop. Trust me, on the pet forum there's nothing we haven't seen, and there are members on this site that are much better equipped to give you medical advice than I am. Keeping it on the public forum will not only ensure that you get advice from many different sources, many that know more about medical issues than I do (I'm better at behavioral stuff, so when Miya starts eating your shoes let me know ;)), but your thread could help someone that is going through something similar with their dog. :)

Here is the pic of the worms that came out all at once just yesterday, this does not include all the ones she past from first round of de wormer and all the ones yesterday before this, this was just the largest amount and I want people to know how serious worms can be for a puppy that comes from a bad situation, I don't condone back yard breeding at all , I didn't know this is what I was getting into when I replied to the ad, needless to say I did get my money back for her due to all the health problems and info on said person was given to my vet to handle the situation about the amount of dogs and the potential health problems on the rest of the dogs, from what I am told they are down to two males only and have to get them nuetured to keep them. I only hope and pray that her litter mates went to good homes and are being cared for by a vet that is as caring as Miyas I am also including a pic of her with my other two dogs to show that you can put a pit in a home with other dogs , I am a strong believer that it is the "owner" not the breed that is bad. Yikes. Poor little Miya. But the fact that her feces is filled with worms, means they're getting out of her system. So yes, it's gross but it means that the de-wormer is working. :)

We have many pit owners on this site, we love all breeds. I too am a firm believer that it's the owner that matters, not the breed.

I have a beagle, a dog notorious for being a pain in the royal, well, they're difficult. I have to say the first few years weren't easy. They're known for escaping, digging, very hard to train (and I can attest to that). He's all that and more. But he's 3 (almost 4) now, and with love, patience, and understanding his breed, he's become a great family member. Not that he never gets into trouble. He has his moments. :)

I also have a border collie cross. He's a little stinker, but he's not yet one. Thankfully bc's are very smart, and learn very quickly. Beagles, not so much. ;)

I actually have a small zoo. I'm thinking I should charge admission to those that visit me. Currently I have 2 dogs, 4 rabbits (3 are rescues), 3 gerbils, a bird, and two fish.

Has she started on heartworm prevention? If now, I would definitely suggest to start.

Your pup is over loaded with worms.. and the ones you are seeing aren't all of them. Pups with lots of worms typically have other types besides roundworms. Whipworms and hookworms are also a problem.. and would be the cause to mucus in the diarrhea. I hope your vet is giving you a series for de-worming protocol. Once the overload is defeated, the heartworm prevention, which is given once a month, will help keep it under control.

I love pitties.. I own one myself.. Best dog ever :) Not necessarily a good dog with other dogs.. but fantastic with people of all walks of life. Super smart, too.

She is on drontal and it is for Round, hook, tape and whip, she gets another heavy does in 3 weeks then they are doing stool sample again, and yes I will do heartworm prevention as well, I will do all I need to , to keep her as healthy as I can :) She is my first pit, I have always had small dogs as you can see in picture, the yorkie is 13 and my Chihuahua is 7 both fixed and loved as much as Miya!

Can any of you tell me how long she will have the diarrhea for ? She in most ways is acting so so much better, but she still has loose stools, not watery just loose and real soft, no mucus or blood either, she is still eating the rice and boiled chicken with some dry dog food in it, and wants to play and I am trying to keep her some what calm but you know how a playful puppy can be... vet is closed and was just curious... ty all

Update on Miya... She is back to her ole puppy self, eating , drinking , playing, and having normal stools..! I am so happy! Thank you for all the support!

Hmm... I did write a post answering your question.. Must not have posted.

Continuous loose stool can be other parasites besides worms.. Such as giardia, coccidia and bacterial over growth.

Sounds like you have a pup on the mend. That's great news. Now you get to watch her grow, and grow she will. That's the one thing that really amazes me. You bring home a little bundle of fur that can't even get up the stairs, and a few months later they're grabbing food off the kitchen counter without even having to try. Sigh.
