Paying homage to the print newspaper (by mark25624)
Recently, I realized my daily print newspaper will be going away, thanks to the Internet.
Think about what it is like now! To have your very own morning newspaper delivered to your house!!
“This is my daily newspaper that is going to help me ease into my day!”
I know what time the delivery guy is supposed to drop it off. I hear his car slow down and then “THUD!! ” the newspaper hits my asphalt driveway.
The delivery guy then speeds off to the next house.
I make a pot of coffee in my Mr. Coffee, then eagerly walk to the end of the driveway to pick up my newspaper. Back in the kitchen, I carefully remove the rubber band that keeps it rolled up.
I gently unroll the newspaper and flatten it.
What to eat for breakfast while I read my newspaper??
A slice of buttered toast??
A scone covered with strawberry jam??
A bowl of Cheerios??
I decide on two chocolate donuts (covered with sprinkles!! )
To go with sips of strong, hot coffee!! I get comfortable at the kitchen table, a feast for my stomach and for my eyes in front of me!
I look at the front page.
I see the local banner, my hometown paper!!
It puts a smile on my face.
It's one thing I can rely on each day.
My eyes glance over the headlines and skim down over the front page to see what happened while I was asleep. Even yesterday's news is new (to me!! ).
I slowly turn the pages (carefully so as not to knock over my coffee cup!). My eyes skim over the articles. My attention is caught by a headline and I read the entire article! Then another one. And another one.
I take a sip of coffee and a bite of donut. Mmmmmm!!
The feel of the newspaper!!
The smell of the ink!!
The swooshing and crinkling sounds the paper makes as I turn the pages!!
Everything I could want in a newspaper is there – news stories (of course!! ), sports, commentary, op-ed, movie reviews and listings, advice columns, even recipes!!
Also style/fashion, television reviews and listings, radio schedules, letters to the editor.
Comics!! Food ads!! The daily puzzles!! (Where did I put my pencil?? )
Oh!! And on the weekend, the Sunday paper!
That is a newspaper to end all newspapers!!
How big it is! Hours of reading! The Sunday ads for so many stores!
My wife comes into the kitchen and pours herself some coffee, makes herself toast (no chocolate donuts for her!! ), sits next to me at the table.
“Good morning, sweetheart!!!!”
I hand her the sections I have finished. She smiles at me!
We read in silence like an old married couple.
(We ARE an old married couple!! )
But then! Guess what!! I remembered.
The Internet was invented. Tablets are here to stay!
And the newspaper as paper is dying.
Soon no Saturday edition.
Maybe only the Sunday paper will survive.
Or maybe not even that!!
I cannot help but wonder!
Is technology hurting us?
Or helping us???
How does getting rid of my beloved morning newspaper help me?????
Is this what I have to look forward to, to start my day????
