How do I get a washer for Amer Std. trip lever on toilet tank bot in 1995?
Washer fell off trip lever on American Standard toilet tank (Hydra 1.6) purchased in 1995 and disappeared. How do I know what size I ask for at store without sounding like a senior dummy, which I am?

    Hi Yosephine...

Probably not able to find just the washer... ;)

You can purchase a gasket making material and make your own, or you can just as easily purchase a new "universal" toilet handle and install that. If you do this, bring the old tank lever with you so you can match it up with the new handle, OK?

Finally, you could also call a local plumbing supply store and see if someone at the counter can go out back and find a washer loose in one of the boxes somewhere... sometimes works if you run into a real nice guy!

    That's my thoughts!

    Thanks Mark,

    Hi Mark, thanks for answering.

Think I'll pass on making my own. Will look for that nice guy you mention at Home Depot or Ace, or purchase a new "universal" toilet handle and hope I don't bust something.

    Thanks again,
    Yosephine

If you are going to change the toilet flush lever you should know that the nut inside the tank that holds the lever on screws on backwards. That is to say that you turn it the opposite way you normally turn a nut to screw it on and off.

    Thanks Harold, I'll remember that.
