I'm gettng separated from my husband and my Grandma is giving me her trailer home to live in (I know, yikes, a trailer home, at least it has a roof) :) What exactly needs to happen? She doesn't want me to pay for it, she's just going to hand it over. Where can I obtain a simple and understandable form to fill out?

The trailer should have a title kind of like a car. She's going to have to sign it over to you. Plus, I would have her write a bill of sale for a nominal amount, like $10.00. Give her the $10.00 too, to make it perfectly legal. Then I'll bet you transfer the title at the DMV or maybe there's an address for you to mail it.

Did not say where you are at. In general trailers have titles like a car and are personal property, so for the trailer itself they just sign the title over and you pay the tax for that transfer.

If it is sitting on land and they are giving you the land also, they will need to deed the land over also

Hi,

You can (it's true!) get the form you need from your local UPS Store or go online and print one out.

Easiest way to fill it out would be to have a copy of your grandmother's deed so you can describe the lot or property as it's listed with your local county registrar's office, or go there and look it up for the info.

*I'm not a pro at this, just had to fill out a similar form, fairly simple and straight forward, especially if you have one to look at to get an idea of how they're written up to use as an example.

I would say that you may want to also talk to an attorney, since in many states any property you get while married, can be community property.

So it is important that a firm court ordered separation agreement is in place before you buy or get more property, so you will want to talk to your divorce attorney prior to transferring property into your name.
