My friend has a red nosed pitbull puppy. She is around 10 weeks old and very smart and emotional. She is loved but latlely has been in trouble because she won't stop eating her poop. She is feed twice a day but acts like she's scravenging for food.Im pretty sure water is almost 24/7.Its so gross she burps and it smells like poop. She seems to get the hicups a lot and bloated. Her energy level is good and she sleeps good.

Dogs eating their own poop have many theories. One of them being that the food being fed currently is not nutritionally complete. What are you feeding her? On top of that theory, it is said that sometimes dogs will eat their own feces because it tastes the same as the actual dog food.

Because this is a puppy, this problem can be fixed. It will probably mean that you go out with her when she goes potty, and picking the poop up immediately. If the poop is no where for her to eat, than the habit will break.

You can purchase things such as FORBID or add meat tenderizer to her food or even feed her pineapple to help deter her from eating the feces.. reports come back that any of these deterrents have a 50/50 chance of actually working. But it would definitely be worth trying out.

There is another theory as to why dogs eat their own poop. This more applies to adult dogs than puppies. But it comes from their wilder days.. it was a way of covering up the scent of another dog that did not belong to the pack. Eliminating their scent would hopefully give them the hint that that particular dog is not welcomed in this area. But that is more for adult dogs rather than puppies.

I think your puppy just has developed a nasty habit. It does stem from litter life.. puppies are always into gross things, sometimes they just want to taste things to see if its good.. and it appears your pup has a fond taste for poo.

But the best way to solve this problem is to just pick up after the puppy every time she goes outside.
