Sewer smell from toilet, loud thud from pipe down in basement when flushed.
    Hello,
This is my first post, and I hope one of you folks can help me out with an answer. Over the last couple of weeks, our main bathroom toilet has developed a sewer gas odor issue, while at the same time a loud thud from the drain pipe in the basement has been getting louder and louder every time we flush said toilet. The toilet in the master bath (which is on the same level as the primary bathroom) has neither of these problems. I suspected the wax ring, but after reading some of the problems posted here, I would like to get an expert opinion before tearing anything apart and running up any unnecessary costs. The toilet was installed in new construction about 4 years ago and has a tendency to clog if it receives a particularly "heavy" waste management task. It does unclog when you take a plunger to it - sometimes easily sometimes not. Any ideas on what may be the culprit here?:D
    Thanks,
    BigGuido

Is this toilet on a sump basin? Is it a roundfront toilet?

    Doug,

In answer to your questions, the toilet is installed on a conventional gravity fed plumbing system. We have a full basement and this toilet is located on the main level. The house is a ranch style and as such has just the main level and the basement. As for the toilet, it is a basic Sterling brand round front toilet. I hope this helps you with your diagnosis. My wife informed me this morning that the smell seems to be getting worse. And can be smelled in the master bedroom which is located adjacent to the main bathroom. It is not coming from the master bathroom toilet or the shower, though. It just seems to be spreading due to concentration.

I checked to see if the toilet was loose, and it doesn't budge. The base appears to be grouted to the vinyl floor covering. I checked down in the basement to see if there was any signs of leakage around the plastic pipes going up to the toilet and there wasn't any. We have an unfinished basement, so it was easy to inspect it.

Thanks in advance for your assistance in this matter.

    Best regards,
    BigGuido

Check for unfinished vent pipes. Or a pipe that is tied into the sump vent.
