Do you mind saying what the crime was?
If drugs, you need to stay away from the medical field, and probably teaching, unless maybe it's teaching at a technical secondary school.
You could go to a tech school yourself - CDL license, alternative energy like wind and solar power, HVAC, building trades.
Jobs were easy to get in South Dakota, doing fracking, but that might not be true now (I saw it on TV news several months ago). It has produced all sorts of jobs including peripheral ones. The downside is that there is no housing and everything has become very expensive - but the pay is good. A lot like the Alaska pipeline years ago. Other areas of the country are doing fracking too. It's probably a dirty and tough job, and there's a lot of opposition to the chemicals that are used in the water pumped underground, and to the whole process in general.
