My kitchen sink is backed up and I'm having a heck of a time getting it cleared up. This is the only drain that is backed up in the whole house. I tried snaking it down about 40 feet and didn't hit anything. The B vent on the roof was covered with snow and it has been cold (-20 for a few weeks). I cleared the b vent poured some hot water down it to clear up any ice. Nothing seems to work. I can get the water level down slowly overnight by a couple inches but that's it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You snaked the vent but did you remove the J bend from the trap and send your snake up into the wall? Back to you, Tom

I've don't it both ways, through and bypassing the J bend to no avail. The snake I used was 50 feet long and the kitchen sink seems to drain under the house so I must have made it most of the way. The kitchen sink is the only one backing up.

Where are you located? I am wondering if your snake isn't going up the vent and not down the drain. Can you see where the vent taps off the drain line, is it a wye connection or a tee?

It's a T connection. I was able to ensure it went down drain and not the vent. That's the confusing part in that it went close to 50 feet down the drain and didn't hit a single blockage. Only went 25 feet down the vent from the roof as I figured any ice should be near the roof line.

Are you on a slab. Crawl or basement? Can you find or see any clean outs on the main drain?

And I'm in Northern Alberta Canada. Today the temp was near -40

Is your sink drain line in an outside wall or does it go down through the floor?

The drain goes from the sink through the floor into the basement and then over to the basement wall and down and drains under the house. The total distance to the basement floor is probably about 30 feet.

It is a basement and there is a clean out near the floor of the basement. It's just for the kitchen drain it seems. This would make sense as the other drains in the house are not backed up. The challenge is that the clean out is about 2 inches off the floor and my basement is finished. If I open that clean out I'm going to have 30 feet times a two inch pipe of water all over the basement.

If that were the case then the whole house must be backed up causing the main drain to be filled with water. Is the clean out PVC or what?

I suppose I might have mid spoken about the clean out. The kitchen sink seems to drain and connect to the rest if the sewer system under the house. The access I was referring to is just before the kitchen drain goes under the basement and before it connects to the rest of the drains. None of the other drains in the house are backed up.
