    There is no vacation setting on an electric water heater.

    Turn breaker to water heater off.

    So really... if you want a real answer, you may need to supply just a little bit more information... and I haven't seen such a thing as you're talking about.

    Harold and I generally agree but there have been some changes to heaters over the years. Whirlpool Water Heaters There are many electric heaters with vacaation setting. The OP needs to carefully read the dial on his heater to tell if he owns one. Shutting the breaker down is still probably the best if you will be gone for weeks at a time. Vacation mode drops the temp from 120 to about 80 degrees where it can still recover fairly quickly when you retrun

    Its electric, no pilot. Some electrics have a vacation setting.

    Of course, on his there is no pilot, but by the end of the week someone with gas will ask the same question—just a preemptive strike.
