I have cast iron pipe and the flange is all broken apart, I chiped away the rest of the flange and try using the slip in type flange( the one that screws down ) buit it doesn't stay tight and when I go to tighten the bolts down it keeps pulling up. Also we recently tiled the floor so the extra thickness maight be a problem? I was thinking about cutting the tile away so the toilet will sit lower or will that not matter.If I need to remove the old lead around the old flange what is the best way to remove it with out the use of a torch.

Assuming that the flange is a PVC flange that fits inside of the cast iron toilet bent (pipe), the interior bolts or screws are intended to create a water tight seal only. The flange must also be screwed to the floor.

To remove the remainder of the broken flange, using a drill bit smaller than the distance between the interior edge of the flange and the outer edge of the pipe, drill a lot of holes in the lead. Then using a screwdriver pry out the lead.

You are probably using something like an Oatey twist-n-set, johnnie bolts hold the toilet to the flange but the blange must be screwed to the floor. You mau have to drill through tile if you did not allow room for the screws. Your flange must be flush with the new tile, if it is not then install flange spacers
