Let me guess: someone claiming to be in such a situation is asking you to wire them the $1,000, and promising you a lot of money for your trouble? Accra, Ghana is the world capital of these scams, in case you didn't know it. It's the main industry there.

There is no money requirement to get out of Ghana, this is a famous scam, The dating one is more popular now, but this is a common one.

The US embassy can easily get them out of the country, replace all stolen documents.
If they have the money for the airline ticket, then they are home, no questions asked.

This is a scam variation on the truth: most countries don't allow people INTO their country on a one way ticket unless they have enough money, and will put you on a plane back home against your will.
Did you get an email claiming to be from a friend? That is often a hijacked email account. DO NOT REPLY, and do not start a new email to your friend. The scammer will get your email. If you have your friend's phone, call him to tell him he's lost his account, or email as many mutual friends about it as you can.

This is funny... the dating scam was more popular but in the last couple days I have seen this scam come up about 4 times on here so far. Must be someone trying it out again.

    It's a scam. Don't send money.
