Happened 2 weeks ago and no changes in routine food etc

Have you been to the vet to rule out something medical?

Have a 10 year old cavalier, arthritic, deaf. Suddenly pooed on a new rug and sons carpet. 2 weeks later pooed in sons room and had just been out for poo and walk. Type 5 in Bristol and same food but his walking is much slower. He is 2kg overweight. He is left in house alone and has never done this before. Before I go to vet any suggestions please?

The only suggestion is the vet. Rule out the medical, and then we can go from there. Any other suggestion at this time would be a guess, and not even a good guess. You must see the vet on this one. Sorry, there's no other option.

Let me know what the vet says. If this isn't medical, we can go from there, but I'm betting that this is medical, or simply due to getting older.

I suspect it's bowel related and arthritis or age or both. Someone at work suggested anal glands?

Unlikely that it's impacted anal glands. A sign of impacted anal glands would be the dog scooching on the rug with his bum. I'm sure you've seen commercials or shows where the dog is doing that. Bum on the rug, dragging to "wipe". That's usually a sign that the anal glands are impacted. You can check, but it's nasty work. If the... um... bum hole (for lack of a better word) is swollen, then it may be the anal glands. If that's the case, then the vet is your best bet. I could tell you how to express the anal glands yourself, but really, it's not something that most people can do without throwing up, myself included. ;)

But pooing in your sons room, I really wouldn't suspect impacted anal glands as being the cause for that.

My best guess, and this is just a guess, is that it's due to age, and loss of bowel control. But, I really would rule out everything else before latching on to that guess, which is why I wanted you to see your vet first. I don't want any guess I make to be taken as a diagnosis, because it's far from it, and not possible on my part, or anyone's part, on the internet. Not even a vet can give you a diagnosis online. I'm sure you realize that.

But impacted anal glands? I'd be surprised if that was the case, going by what you described.

I'm thinking pain. When dogs are in pain, they will go potty at random times because they simply cannot help it.

Being an older dog, he could also become incontinent. Typically, this is related to the back. Seeing as how he is a smaller dog and older, back pain, such as a mild case of IVDD, would be suspected.

Impacted anal glands would produce something different, such as scooting and a dog just looking uncomfortable. Pooping at random? Highly unlikely. But you never know when it comes to how an animal feels and what they will do to try and relieve pain.
