Someone me and my husband know is wanting to give her baby away. Me and my husband are wanting to adopt the little girl. The baby lives in Georgia and we live in Tennessee. The mother is wanting to sign over her rights and doesn't want anything to do with the baby. She doesn't even want to see us. How can we do all of this and get legal rights so we can be her parents without hiring a lawyer

It's not likely to happen without an attorney.

Is it possible to get temporary custody and then hire a lawyer down the road. I'm sure getting a lawyer would be very costly

Getting temporary custody is not that easy. Are you relatives of the mother? Where is the father of this baby?

Yes, a lawyer will be costly, but if adoption is what you want to do, that's what you'll need to do to get it done right. The lawyer knows all the red tape you have to go through, and will leave no stone unturned. I'd hate to see you get this child, bring her into your home, make her your own, and love her, only to have her taken away because all the t's weren't crossed, and I's weren't dotted. Worse, the mother or father of this child changed their mind, and there's no legal documentation to back you up.

This isn't something to scrimp on. This is something where you go all in, and pay the price, so that it's done right.

No we are not relatives or related in any way. This women is friends with my husbands buddies brother. The baby is 3 month old and the mother is wanting it done asap or she says she is going to give it to child protective services. I agree a lawyer is needed but the mother is not wanting to be apart of anything besides siging the papers. And there is no father on the birth certificate so I don't think that will be an issue. We have never met this lady so this lady doesn't want to know anything about us. Doesn't want to know our names or what we look like or which direction we take the baby. The mother is on drugs and says the baby is cramping her style

But there is a father somewhere. Therefore his interests have to be addressed. An attempt has to be made to give him notice. That's one of the things a lawyer can help you with.

So you do this without an attorney and the father finds out and files suit to overturn the adoption. Or what happens if a 6 months down the road the mother decides she was unduly coerced into giving up her child and ants her back.

When people tell me they can't afford an attorney, they usually can't afford not to have one. Adoption is one of those things where you need to make sure that all the legalities are completely covered. Have you even tried shopping around for an attorney?
