I have installed a Hampton Bay ceiling fan with a remote control. The lights will turn on and off with the remote. The fan turns on with the wall switch, but does not respond to the remote control. The wiring is as follows: From the ceiling a black, red, white and ground. The fan remote control unit has a black, white, and ground. I connected the black to the black, the white to the white, and the ground to the ground. The red wire I capped.

Is the problem of not being able to control the fan via the remote a wiring problem or a problem with the remote itself?

How many switches are used to control the fan? One or two? Usually when there is a red and black wire in the ceiling fan box there are multiple switches one wire would control the light (black)and the other would control the fan (red). My suggestion would be to hook up both the red and black wires in the ceiling box together to the remote black wire, and see if you can get it to work then.

The black and red are both hot. The black is controlled with the light switch. The red is wired straight and always hot. I suspect if you wire the red to the fan's black, you will be able to control everything with the remote, but keep in mind, the wall switch will now do nothing.

Is the remote receiver a separate unit, or built in to the fan? Does the fan have pullchains? Does the remote mount in your wall switch or is it handheld?

Ceiling fan wiring - Ceiling Fans N More

The remote is a separate unit. I have wired the black and red wires from the ceiling to the black wire from the remote. This did not change anything. The fan runs, but the remote does will not change the speed or turn it on or off. The lights work fine.

If the remote is a separate unit, how is it connected to the fan? Sounds like the problem may be there.
