Just got the new GE dryer 3 prong . Use to be an old dryer years ago. 30 Amp breaker. Turn it on. And the breaker tripped? Could it be the old breaker needs to be replaced

That dryer, like most, does not come with a cord or plug. Plugs are an accessory. Who added it for you, the store?

Yes sears workmen put the cord on. But the dryer breaker tripped. They checked the wiring again to make sure it was correct. I was not around personally. Last week I got a reading of 240
Volts so the line was hot. When they plugged in the dryer, the breaker tripped.

You have either a bad breaker or too small wire for the dryer. You need an amp meter to know what the problem is that causes this.

One thing comes to mind: If the breaker trips before the dryer is turned on it is wired hot to ground where the pigtail wire is hooked to dryer.

Going to look tomorrow on the back of the dryer. See how the Sears guy wired it.
Should have a ground strap to the neutral. Another thing they just put the vent hose
But did not secure it with anything. I think it should have a pipe clamp.

If you have a meter you can check it out very easily: On "Ohms" read from center to the two outside prongs and divide into 240 to get total amps that it should draw. So, if you read 10 ohms across the two outside prongs on plug wire divided into 240 will equal 24 amps. You should read nothing from each outside prong to the center prong. As you make the readings the "Start" button must be pressed with it on a drying cycle.

Very Good. Last week before the dryer came. The mult imeter showed 240 volts.in the receptacle But when the Sears workmen wired up the dryer and they hit the start button the 30 amp breaker tripped. Thanks for the OHMs test advice
