How do I drain a water heater?

Drain it to replace it ? Down towards the bottom of the water heater will usually be a silver valve with a standard hose bibb fitting on it. You can put on a piece of garden hose to direct where the water drains to. Open that fitting and tank will drain. Make sure cold water supply valve is closed first.

Make sure you open a hot water faucet in an upstairs location.
