I am aware that the Social Security Administration provides detailed employee earnings that includes dates of employment and employer names for a fee. I was told by a customer service rep. that it can take 4 months to receive the report.

What has your experience been trying to acquire report? How long did it take? Are there other resources to access detailed employee earning other than contacting past employers? I am specifically interested in getting employment dates.

1. Summary Earnings Query (SEQY)
Total covered earnings for each year requested, 1952 and later.
Available online. Dollar total for the year; no other information.

2. Detailed Earnings Query (DEQY)
Starting 1978. Employer names and addresses are available for each year requested, BUT you need the EIN of each employer!
3. Informational Earnings Record Estimate (ICERS Function 3)
Total earnings, itemization by quarter for years after 1950, and benefit computations are available on-line. No employer name.
4. Disability Insured Status Calculator Online (DISCO)
Total earnings, itemization of QC's for years after 1950, and benefit computation are available on-line.

I'm not sure why anyone would pay the fee for DEQY when you need an EIN. And none of the searches give employed dates, other than the total for a given year, or also broken down to quarters.

For the type of information you want, the Social Security Administration is probably your best source, but getting any data from a large bureaucracy always takes some time.

Thank you joypulv, but I think the DEQY you're talking about is a different thing. The Detailed Employee Earnings according to the SSA and form ssa-7050 must be submitted by mail and info can't be accessed online. According to the SSA the report does include dates, employer address, etc and it doesn't ask for employer EIN number. An there is a fee for each year that you request. I would give it a try, but 4 months is way too long. Need it sooner than that.

By the way, to do those online searches, did you have to login to your SSA account (the one that one uses to access SSA statements)?

ONe last thing. I am trying to register to view my Social Security Statement online, but it asks for a 10 digit phone number to verify info. What kind of verification do they do with the phone? The reason I ask is that I am currently outside of the US, but I can give my wife's phone number who is in the US right now. Or do they just ask for the phone number that is on file with them?

I didn't say the DEQY is available online. I got the part about the EIN off the SS website, verbatim. I thought EIN was new, because I too thought it wasn't needed. I never applied for it.
I would like to see some wording from SS that says they provide dates of employment, as in actual month and day. They might take 4 months because they contact employers, but as far as I know they don't have any information that isn't provided by payroll tax forms submitted by employers, and those don't provide actual day. (Many of mine are long defunct, so I am not going to bother with the fee for 45 years of work.)
I just tried to open an account, and it told me my phone number couldn't be verified. I don't have a phone at the moment, and it wouldn't take my last phone on the second try. And each phone rejection was instant, so they couldn't possibly have tried to call. Mystery. I tried a friend's number, and it kicked me off the site for 24 hours for 3 failures.

A few days ago I changed my address on SS online, and it asked for my last SS payment amount, and wouldn't accept the last one, which was paid to me 3 weeks ago. I had to enter the one from the month before, even though I have direct deposit. That shows how slow they are even online.

I don't think Social Security Adm can provide dates of employment. I do not know of any form submitted to SSA by employers that provides that information. The W-2 only has totals for the year. The 941 has totals by quarter but no employee information. I have never heard of Social Security verifying dates of employment. That is not to say they do not. I have heard of Social Services verifying dates of employment and amounts paid.

Thank you. This is a statement from SSA:
"
Certified or non-certified detailed earnings information - This includes periods of employment or self-employment. It also includes the names and addresses of employers; or"

The question is, what does "periods of employment" mean.

Also came across some articles online that mentioned that employment dates are provided by the SSA, but I am not sure if they are a credible source.

If somehow I could even get quarterly Social security contribution for me, I would be able to do a rough estimate of my employment dates. Is that info available?

By the way, are there any established/credible companies doing background check that will provide dates of past employment?

Your Point 3 states that quarterly earnings are available on-line. Does this mean I'll have access to it, once I sign up for mySocialSecurity account?

I don't know. ICERS is used for insurance certified responses. I do know that SS information isn't always current, even if accurate at the time written. I've run into it before. So what you were told on the phone may indeed be correct, and what I copied out of date and wrong. So I apologize about that.
I plan to try again to open an account again when my 24 hours are up.

I tried to register online as well, and ran into the same problem as you did. I am going to call Monday and see if they can help me with that over the phone. Please let me know if you succeed with registration.
