If you think your stepdad is trying to get your attention try this. Preferably when you are alone and get this feeling, stop what you are doing close your eyes and say something like " Dad I know your hear with me, I love you and I am OK. Then say Dad I need you to move on please so that I can mourne your death. It doesn't have to be those words exactly. Hopefully that helps.
