I was just in the garage while my boyfriend was upstairs in the shower and it began to "rain" in my garage! The bathroom is on the 2nd story, just over the garage. Then I noticed a small pool of water around the bottom of my water heater. So, I think I have a combo problem! Joy! I'm thinking my hot water heater is about to break but why is water leaking from the upstairs shower as well?! Might the two leaks be related? Or 2 separate plumbing issues? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

While I was in the garage tonight I noticed my hot water heater had a good amount of water all around the bottom of it. I'm guessing it is broken. Also, my boyfriend was in the shower upstairs just above the garage and a lot of water began to leak from the shower upstairs into the garage. It was like rain pouring through the garage ceiling! Freakin' awesome! Right? How do I figure out what pipes are leaking? Is the leaky water heater playing a role in the shower leak? Help me figure this out please!

You will have to open ceiling under shower to see where water is coming from.

To test the shower pan, cover drain and fill pan with about 1 inch of water. With someone watching in garage, remove drain cover to see if that is where leak is.

If no leak, using a hose, run water where the bottom row of tile and pan meet. Run water for about 2 minutes. If no leak move up to next line of tile. Keep doing this until you see water in garage.

Once you have determined where leak is will be a lot easier to fix.

Is it possible water around heater came from the shower?

Yes! You have two problems. Let's take them one at a time. Your water heater is a pressure leak while the shower sounds like a drainage leak. Water Heater first. Shut the power off at the breaker box and open up the two inspection ports on the heater. Tell me where you first find moisture on the insulation. If it's at the top check the pipes connections. Are they full of water? Let me know. Tom

Sorry. I really don't know how to use this site!
It's the shower drain that's leaking. We figured that out.
Not sure if the water heater is leaking or if the standing water just drained to where the water heater sits. My water heater sits under where the shower is leaking.
I think I better call a plumber. My house was built in the 1980's so lord knows what else needs work!

I can walk you through the shower repair and save you some $ if you wish. Just let me know. As for the heater mop up the water underneath and watch for more sings of moisture
