I posted a question yesterday about my sewer smell coming from my inline vent/aav valve. There have been similar questions with people having the same problems and I have tried everything suggested so far and still have the smell. I am almost positive the smell is coming from the vent. There is no smell coming from the sink and everything drains fine so I know my traps are not clogged. My father was a steam fitter for over thirty years and a dang good plumber. My house is a manufactured home and we had this problem on the aav valve for the trap to my washer. My father has never heard of these inline vents until I told him about it. He lives in ny and I'm in Utah so it's hard for him to help over the phone. Anyway, he has always ran vent pipes through the ceiling and out through the roof, and he suspects that this is a bad setup and lazy plumbing. Is he correct? It seems that a lot of people have problems with these vents? I bought two new oatley aav valves yesterday and no luck, I blew through them to male sure they worked properly. Today I broke down and bought the more expensive model I guess it's called the studor? Any way they were $20 a piece. I just installed them so I don't know if the smell is gone yet. I don't see anywhere else the smell could be coming from. If this does not work should I consider ripping my bathroom apart and running a vent up through the roof? Thanks,

AAVs are great for most plumbing applications. I have then in my bathroom, island sink and utility room sink. Studor makes the best approved AAVs. Make sure the smell is not coming from the toilet base. If it is, you have a bad wax ring.

It's definitely not the toilet.
It's not the trap either, it's below the sink and above the floor. So, my sink drains down into the trap then the trap tees into a pipe that goes up to the aav valve and down into a clean out and then through the floor where it ties into the main sewer line of my house. I'm almost positive it's the left side sink, but the smell travels over towards the other sink so the entire vanity smells. I cannot for the life of me figure this out I can't believe that three valves would not work so my only other explanation is they did not install these vents high enough above the trap. So I'm tearing all the fixtures out and redoing them this weekend there is simply no other explanation for why this is happening or the exact location the smell is coming from. Thanks

AAVs are normally 4-6" above the horizontal trap arm. Code will dictate but that's where I have them.

Studor Vents need to be installed with a slight tilt back. They also need to be mounted as high under the sink as possible. This sink basin will likely dictate the highest point. Unscrew the valve and shake it. You should feel the action of the valve. Use plumbers putty on the threads of the valve and re-install after a rinse in hot water. I had the same issue under the kitchen sink and was able to re-install the same vale back into position. Time 5 min. Cost zip. Odor gone.
