My one year old is allergic to penicillin and I just recently found black mold in his sippy cup. He has been "sick" for about a month now with a runny nose, wet cough and trouble breathing (wheezing) and his pediatrician gave him breathing treatments and a prescription (which I can't remember the name of) but nothing has helped! I want to know if the mold in his cup is the cause of him being sick. HELP PLEASE!

Was the doctor notified of the mold?

No, she was not. I just noticed it today and have been calling the pediatrician all day and leaving messages. No answers yet. He was just kicked off his insurance, and we can't afford doctor bills right now; however, if it is serious, I will do whatever it takes to get him better no matter how much debt we get into. I just want some answers before I do that...

I agree. See if the treatment given by the doctor will help with mold exposure.

If he's allergic to mold, certainly that type of exposure won't help.

I wanted to mention, some states (such as mine, Illinois) provide insurance to all children who are not covered under their parent's insurance. I recommend you check with your county to find out if coverage is available for your child. You might qualify for medicare as a mother with a dependent child for your family - check into it because you really need insurance and regular medical care for a child that age. There are regular shots the child will need, and generally, you just need to be able to take small children to the doctor regularly.

What concerns me is that there was mold in his sippy cup. And he was sick for a month and you think it's from the mold. Didn't you clean the sippy cup for a month?

Of course I cleaned his cup. Most of the time I'd put it in the dishwasher, but if I was going to use it right away after something else was in it, I'd wash it by hand. He also goes to the baby sitter with that cup and I'm not sure how often she rinses or cleans it out during the day when she has him.

I called his pediatrician yesterday and she replies with "that's impossible to get mold in a sippy cup. he isn't sick from that!" She continued to sass me. However, when you Google this problem with sippy cups, almost everyone has had this same issue.. ha! As of yesterday afternoon and all day today my son has not used that cup and we bought new ones.. he isn't showing any signs of being sick like he was before. No coughing, runny nose.. nothing.

Honestly I would have thrown that cup away and gotten a new one.
As far as I am aware it is NOT impossible to get sick from mold in a cup. And a sippy cup absolutely CAN get him sick. Did the doctor prescribe prednisone by any chance?

Are you seeing the pediatrician? Or are you seeing the doctors PA? I always dislike seeing the PAs at pediatrician offices. Certainly not all but in general I have found them to be sloppy and rushed and not thorough at all.
