I own a 2002 Nissan Maxima. I recently had a "service engine soon" light come on. The car has approx 49,000 miles on it. I purchased a OBDII diagnostic device which said I had a faulty O2 Sensor on "Bank 1, Sensor 2." There are 4 O2 sensors on this car. All have color coded shielding on the wires. Two are in Bank 1. Can anyone tell me which color code is "Bank 1, Sensor 2."

Had to replace the oxygen sensor on a 1984 Buick Riviera. The car only had one. Did you try to do a search on the net to find a diagram which might explain which one is which on your Nissan? Also could try going to an Auto Zone as they are super helpful and might be of assistance in showing you how to identify the sensors w/the numbers.

I also have an 02 maxima and my oxygen sensors just went out at 49,200 miles. Two in back is what they told me. The service engine light turned on. I had it checked at the nissan dealer and had to pay $80 just to have it diagnosed. It is going to cost me 660.00 dollars to have them replaced plus tax from the dealer or I can pay a non-deal auto repair shop 500.00, which I think I am going to do unless if it is something I can do myself if anyone's knows. I guess this is a common ploblem with the 02-03 maxima's, which sucks because if its so common then nissan should do a recall or offer some kind of discount for it. They also need to recall the hid headlights because right now the 02-03 nissan maxima is the number 1 sedan being stolen because the headlights are easy to remove.

Try unplugging one of the sensors and seeing what codes you get. That should tell you which one it is. Another one or 2, and you should have it figured out. Before you replace the oxygen sensor, do some more checking. It is possible for say a leaky fuel injector to cause the oxygen sensor to read low and throw a bad sensor code.

Also check your warranty. The government requires longer warranties on pollution control parts.

In answer to previous post, I believe black is the color associated with the bank 1 oxygen sensor.

I got 97 maxima with 44k miles, had same service engine lamp on dashboard. Took to mechanic since cheaper than dealership. First test showed a faulty next sensor which I'm not even sure what it is but ran me 184 bucks at dealership. Today had lamp turn on again so mechanic now said that oxygen sensor bank one was bad. That's the one on the front passenger side so if that's what you have then its black wires or what not. They put in a datsun from 00 maxima on mine since its cheaper than getting from dealer. Ran me 125 for labor and part. In all spent 400 bucks in last 2 days on these stupid sensors, does anybody even know what they do and if you need them. Hopefully the other 2 don't go bad cause this is ridiculous.

I also have an '02 Maxima but I only have 28,000 miles on it! The service engin light came on Feb 1st and, conveniently, it was 33 days after my 3-year warranty ran out. Took it to the dealer and paid $106 to have them tell me that BOTH of my rear sensors are bad and that it would cost another $550 to repair.

To Labman: You mentioned that the government requires longer warranties on pollution control parts. I did a search for the Federal Clean Air Act and found that "the warranty is 2 years/24,000 miles for all emissions-related parts and 8 years/80,000 miles for the catalytic converter, electronic emissions control unit and on-board diagnostic device". Can you tell me which category the sensors fall into?

I've had nothing but problems with this car and can't wait to get rid of it...

I am sorry, but I am afraid the sensors are only the 2 year. I thought it was longer.
