Take the battery to an autoparts store...and have them charge and load test it. But what you describe in your original question points at a bad alternator.....a car can actually run without a battery once its started because the alternator supplies more than enough current to keep it running.....but don't try it.....the process of disconnecting a battery cable or reconnecting it while the car is running carries the risk of damaging the regulator or diode pack in the alternator, (most cars have them internal).the same store can test out your alternator too......even new ones can be defective or fail......I've actually had that happen.
