    Landlord now charging for trash
    I've lived in my apartment for about 8 months, and just a couple of days ago I received a flier saying that they're going to start charging for trash. My lease says, I'm writing this straight from the contract, "Lessee agrees to pay for electricity, water, sewer, telephone and cable commencing at the time of occupancy, furnished to the Premises, including deposits required; except as follows: trash."
    What recourse do I have in this situation? What actions should I take?

    Refuse to pay. Write them a letter, enclosing a copy of the lease, with the "except as follows: 'trash.' " part high-lighted.

    Yes, just refuse to pay them. Tell them the lease says you don't have to pay.

    Is it possible that this notice went out for everyone's next lease renewal, not right now?
    If it's just a warning for a few months from now, then yes they can start to charge.

    If a new lease so providing is signed. Or if the lease expires and tenancy continues on a month-to-month basis.

    The flier states that the new charge will be on "upcoming bills".

    This coming week I'm planning on calling the management office and trying to straighten this out. If this doesn't work then I'll follow it up with the letter. Thank you for the advice.

    Bottom line is they can't change the terms of your lease, without your agreement. They can require this if you decide to renew or stay beyond the lease expiration.
