My husband is stealing my Adderall!
Ok, so I was prescribed Adderall about 6 months ago. Sometime between then and now, my husband started taking them as well. I don't take the full dose so I don't mind that he takes the extra's. The problem is, as anyone on Adderall knows, the effects wear off and you end up needing a little bit more. That's what's going on with him right now. So he's been taking more than I have extra and putting me at risk of going without in between refills.

A little background... He has no medical/mental issues and I do. I absolutely need this medication or I am completely dysfunctional. I have been left without Adderall for several days once due to his over using it. I became depressed, and did absolutely no cleaning, cooking, or spending time with my daughter as a stay-at-home mom. He has a high profile, high stress job.

However, since he's been taking Adderall, he has literally became a machine! He's taking on home improvement projects, spending more time at the gym (we both make health and fitness a priority), he's received several positive performance reviews at work, he's less stressed, never tired anymore, and just generally happier, more focused, stress-free and joy to be around.

So my question is this... being that I cannot afford for him to be taking my Adderall, we have decided that he should get his own prescription. Being that he surely does NOT have ADD, how can we go about getting him his own? Is it better to doctor shop and fake symptoms of ADD, or to just be honest that he's been taking it for several months already and it has seriously improved every aspect of his life? In turn, his happiness and ability to get things done, be stress-free at home AND at work, etc. has made our marriage and ability to work together through the daily stresses of life (work, children, home, finances, school, etc.) totally stress-free and even enjoyable!

    I appreciate your responses. Thanks!

Doctor shop and fake symptoms, no I don't think so. Have you ever heard the old saying 'when first we practice to deceive... '. No, better to be perfectly honest about this situation, but if he doesn't have any symptoms, then I don't think they will give it to him. You can't get any more then you are already prescribed, so I guess he is stuck.

This is not a good situation.

No, don't fake symptoms. That I dangerous even if he seems to be fine on the medicine. Talk to your doctor about him being on. Explain the differences in his behavior and see if they have any suggestions. But you NEED to be HONEST.

There is a lot of information on the internet about Adderall. Most say it is an addictive, controlled substance and depending on locatio,n penalties can be severe for illegal use, and possibly for allowing someone else to use your pills knowingly and illegally. . Does a Dr. have to report admitted illegal use if confided by a patient? Can't find a definitive answer to that either.
Maybe the safest approach is for you to tell your Dr. that you believe your husband is taking your pills and the effect has been very positive. Maybe a lawyer would have some other advice on the best way to handle this.

The real solution here is for him to slowly get off it! I went through that after dental work and taking Vicodin. It made me feel SOOOOOO good... not just relieving pain from my teeth but all my aches and pains from getting old and having some injuries. So I wrote out a time chart, kept adding a half hour to the times between pills, and then started cutting them in half to taper off further. I had more than the oral surgeon gave me because my dentist gave me some earlier that I hadn't used.
So again - he needs to taper off and learn to live without it!
