My 7 year old, spayed female dog occasionally pees on the beds in the house. One bed is brand new and the other isn't.

She is inside all day while I am at work and never has "accidents". As soon as I get home, she goes outside. We run and play until she's ready to come in. Later, she likes to sit out back by the door (glass) and just "survey her domain". There haven't been any changes in routine in the last two years.

Usually when it happens is when I'm getting ready for bed. There doesn't seem to be any reason or trigger. I've sprayed the beds with some stuff I got at Petco but it's had no effect.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

How long has this been going on?

My first thought is to have her checked for a UTI.

I have an appointment next week so I'll ask. It's been going on for a few months now but just at random times.

I'm not an expert, just a long time dog owner who reads about dogs a lot. It does not sound like she needs to "go" or a medical problem to me. It sounds like a behavioral problem, by peeing on your bed she is letting you know she is in charge. Does she sleep in your bed? I would recommend obedience training. If she has already had it, I would begin practicing some exercises daily. Make her sit, shake, lay down for everything, dinner, treats, going outside, everything. Make yourself the "top dog" again. I would also lock her out of your room when you are getting ready for bed so she doesn't have the opportunity. Finally I would recommend she get heavy exercise before bed. She might not be ready for bed and protesting after being alone all day. Play hard or take a long walk within an 1-2 hours before bed. Good luck!

Normally I would agree with you, but this is a 7 year old spayed dog, with no changes in her household or routine. A medical issue makes the most sense.
