We've cleaned the vent pipe but our kitchen sink still gurgles when we flush the toilet. We've been advised to add a stuter vent under that sink which we will do later today. The big question is why has it started gurgling when we aren't flushing or running any water anywhere? It just gurgles for no apparent reason!

Update: installed the stuter vent, still have the gurgle when we flush, but the sink drains better. HELP!

The vent pipe you have to clear is the bathroom lavatory roof vent. Put out enough snake to reach the base and 15 feet more. Good luck, Tom

In that case all your vents are revented back in the attic to a single roof vent, While this cleans up the roof line it really puts a hardship on the plumber attempting to locate and snake the vent in question. We hate this!
What we have to do in this case is hall our sewer machine and cables up in the attic. Then we have to locate the vent in question and cut it loose from the system. Only then can we snake. After we have to reconnect the vent back and get out of there. That nifty roof line just cost you in a whole lot of extra labor. So, what's your pleasure? Live with the gurgle or spend the $ to get rid of it? Let me know, tom

This is a very old house. I really mean we only have one vent. It runs from the basement, up through the wall, 90's into an upstairs small bedroom, (yes, this portion is exposed in the room), then 90's out the wall, and ends pointing straight out horizontally about 10" from the siding over an almost flat roof. Who ever plumbed this house should be shot!
We lived here for 5 years and never had any problems before. Could the fact that our neighbors across the street had sewer problems and the city blew out the main sewer line in the street have anything to do with this? Everything is draining has it always has, but the gurgle is driving us crazy.

Back in Wisconsin we had older homes with just a single 4" cast iron pipe running the length of the house and exiting the roof. You have a "S" traps in your house and they can vent through the trap causing a gurgle. My best advice would be to add a AAV (see image) on every trap in your house. That takes care of your gurgle.
