I have a white tile shower stall that I was replacing the hardware on, everything was going smoothly until I removed the floor drain flange and grate. I was going to just replace the grate and flange, but noticed that down inside the drain from the top to about 4 inches down is extremely rusted. Is this cause for concern and should or could I replace the top 4 inches of the drain. You comments are appreciated.

Where is your shower located? On a slab or upper floor? How old is your house? Since you mention rust I assume the plumbing is a cast iron trap with a galvanized iron raiser.
If you're on a slab don't tear up the shower floor until you have to.
If the trap can be reached consider converting the trap to PVC with a PVC stub up to connect to your present drain. Good luck, Tom

The shower is on second floor, and the house was built in 1991.
It looks to me like once you get down 4 to 6 inches there is black (PVC).

Hey Greg,
If your home was built in 91 most likely you have plastic for drainage. I don't think you need worry. Put the strainer back on and rub-dub away.
