How would we know, based on so little? Maybe he really did buy the ring for you, and maybe he thought proposing to you with your dad present would somehow be a nice gesture for your dad to see, especially if he is seriously ill. And then when he saw the look on your face he lied about it. Who knows? I don't understand why there is such a lack of communication and so much confusion. Talk to HIM, not strangers online.
