What are the advantages & disadvantages of using cedar shakes or ashphalt shingles on a roof?

With today's architectural shingles, I would not use cedar shakes. Higher maintenance, higher insurance costs, much higher installation costs. I am currently recovering a cedar shake entrance cover that has moss and algae at least 1/2" thick. We are using 30 year cedar color asphalt shingles.
