Hi.. Its my 1st time writing her. I had a puppy 4 month old shihpoo. He was sick. On Monday nigth he was vomoting. In on Tuesday morning I saw a bloody stool and vomit. On Wednesday morning I took him to the vet,the vet give me a antibiotic (bactille) and tiki-tiki. Two days after I took him again to another vet because I can't take to see his not improving from the med he take. The new vet said he has a parvo and he need to be admitted so I decided to admit my pup but so sad he died. I fell guilt that I just looked at him 4days after I decided to send him to private vet and admitted. I feel so sad. My Heart broke. I miss him so much. He was so sweet. My question is, if send him to the vet early is he alive until now? How many chances he has? I just thought I send him into wrong veterenarian? Can I blame the vet for not saving his life?

No you cannot blame the vet for not saving his life. Yes, the first vet should have been more aware of what was going on and the seriousness of it especially in a puppy- but placing blame isn't going to help anyone and he did give you an antibiotic which in most cases is used for treatment of Parvo (I'm assuming you meant Baytril). Parvo is a serious infection and even if caught early it can still cause death in young puppies. Because of the nature of the disease earlier action may have saved his life, but it might not have.
As your dog was 4 months old he should have been vaccinated against Parvo which would have helped prevent the disease; this is why preventative vet care is so important. I'm curious if he had, had any vaccinations before this? If not, did the vet not give them or did you decide against giving them?

Thanks for your reply. He had a vaccincation but only anti rabies :(.. I never know what parvo is till it happen to my puppy. I still keep blaming myself for not taking him to the vet early.. Im so so sad,I miss my puppy.. I don't know how to move on..

I'm very sorry for your loss. Please know that it is not safe to bring another puppy or unvaccinated adult dog into your home during the next year. The parvo virus can survive in your home and in your yard for up to a year. I'm sure you would never want to go through this tragedy again.

I don't know wher he get the parvo. Because every weekend we go to the house of my mom then on Monday we will back to our own house. On Tuesday morning he is vomiting and has a diarrhea. Do you think the aprvo is in our house or in my mom house?

He could have been exposed weeks earlier in any number of places. However anywhere he had used the bathroom recently is now contaminated and will be for a long time. You can clean a tile floor with bleach, however the yard is a very different story. There is no way of knowing a dog is sick until they start showing symptoms. At that point they have been sick a while. The best thing you can do as a dog owner is to make sure they receive all their vaccines as a puppy and be very careful where you take them until fully vaccinated.

Please help how to move on. I miss my puppy so much..

I am sorry for your loss. It's hard to move on, but maybe when you feel up to it, you can rescue a dog from the pound. You will love another dog and save its life.

I still have a dog.. 1 is chichua and 1 is poodle but my favorite one is dead. His name is Diego. I always think of him. Every move I take remind me. Can't helpbut to cry. ;-(

It's very soon, but you will be able to love another dog one day. Love the ones you have even more.

I hope so.. my only pray is to forget my diego soon. I don't want to think of him anymore because the more I think of him the more I blame myself and fell guilt..

We all learn from our lives. You now know about Parvo and vaccinations for it. Your puppy is in a happy place in Doggy Heaven. Don't forget about him. Treasure the memories.

It'll take some time. I don't know if you've ever heard of this poem, but it always makes me feel better. It's a nice way of thinking about it.

I'm also going through a pet loss. Yesterday, the family Yorkie, Peanut was hit by a dump truck. He was an excellent dog, and it was such a shock. I'm really far away from home so it's hard to not be there for my family, and it feels like that if I had been there maybe something would have happened differently. But, blaming people, including myself isn't going to help anyone. I have my Copper still and I love him just as much (probably more since he lives with me). Sometimes, you just have to hold on tight to the pets you still have, and have a good cry. I'd like to think one day we'll see them again.

Parvo has an 80% fatality rate. In other words, only 20% of dogs that get it actually survive, even with treatment.

In other words, it's not your fault, or the fault of your vet. You did what you could.

Parvo lives in feces for over a year. The only way to kill it is with bleach, and to bleach your entire house and yard with bleach, it's really not possible.

If you leave your house, go for a walk, and step on grass, or a sidewalk, where a dog pooped, and that dog had parvo, that parvo is now on your shoes, you bring it home and bam. It's a highly contagious disease. The biggest carriers of parvo are birds, especially ducks and geese.

Your parents aren't to blame any more than you are. It happens, and that's why there's a vaccine to prevent it. It takes three vaccines before a puppy has the antibodies to fight parvo. Even after the shots parvo can still happen, but usually those dogs that have had all their vaccines, don't die from parvo. They get a much milder form of the disease.

No matter what, it was no ones fault, so stop trying to find blame, or blaming yourself.
