    Pepto bismol and children
    Hey guys.

Ayla is sick. She is throwing up, and has diarrhea. But no fever, or respiratory symptoms. She can't sleep because of her tummy troubles. Its 1am and she is exhausted. (I already called her off school for tomorrow)

I remember taking pepto bismol as a kid. But the bottle says that its not for kids under 12.

Can I give her 1 TBSP to help her tummy tonight? Or can it cause a serious problem? She has had the kid version of it before. So I know she isn't allergic (unless they are different)

Ive heard about reyes syndrome, but I've also heard that it only occurs in certain situations. I'm trying to Google it, but I'm not finding anything.

    She weighs 75lbs.

Is there an all night pharmacy open near you? You could call the pharmacist and ask them.

Thanks tickle. :P that's what I did last night. He said NOT to give it to her until I talked to her doctor first to make sure that her illness isn't one that can be exacerbated by pepto.

So I went old school, and gave her some 7-up and jello. And she slept in my bed last night lol.

Now we are BOTH sick today. But at least no one is throwing up anymore lol.

And true to every child out there, ayla is now up and running around, angry at me because I won't let her go play LOL.
Sleep and a bit of tyenol seems to be the all cure for children. Hehe.

Guess I was a bad parent, at 75 or 80 lbs I often gave my son's adult medications ( OTC) just in slightly lower doses.

Sorry I didn't get to you sooner Jennie, got to actually sleep last night then had class all day today. You did the right thing.

Pepto Bismol contains acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and can cause Reye's Syndrome in children under 16 years old.

Its OK J. that's what the pharm told me too :) and of course, after a long sleep in and some tyenol, she is up and 'better' all of a sudden this afternoon lol

And this is one reason we have child overdoses in our ER. Sorry, Chuck, but I see it all too often.
