Just found out our sewer pipe may be leaking into the ground. Because of this leak, every rain or heavy laundry use, the ground water sump pit smells like an open sewer. The fix is beyond our means at this time. Is this a health hazard?

If raw sewage is indeed getting into your ground water sump it is indeed a health.issue. With a broken pipe in the yard, it can become a public health issue depending on your closeness to other houses. Health overcomes cost. See if you can work with a plumber on a scheduled payment.
