Hi, I recently ran water lines to and from a water softener and to a deairator for a boiler. Since the deairator was 12 ft higher than the softener we ran them diagonally, I have received a lot of flak over this but not sure why it is unacceptable, can you tell me?

Because you should keep everything vertical or horizontal and you 90 degree elbows.

Besides making it look a lot better... even with electrical work... its the preferred way.

Just because you can... doesn't mean you should.

Going to have to disagree with you on that Smoothy! In plumbing, especially sewer and waste piping, 45s (i.e. diagonal) is always the preferred method of running pipes.

In terms of water supply, there is really no difference between 45s and 90s except that 45s create less turbulence/drag in the water lines.

Finally, I see no reason why running a diagonal pipe from a water softener to a deaerator would be an issue but I simply don't know enough about water softeners and deaerators to feel that I can comment in a way I can be sure is helpful to Thight1.

Perhaps Thight1 can contact the manufacturer of the water softener or the deaerator and ask them why this would be an issue... would be neat to know if there really is a reason this would be a no-no!

Perhaps some of the others on the page will know? Maybe?

Thanks for the feedback , looking for a little more reason than ''you should'' or ''its the preferred way''. And by the way it actually looks pretty good just wondered why the old timers don't like it.

Old timers don't like it because it isn't as pretty and organized as vertical or horizontal piping.
