My furnace starts up and then shuts down after about five seconds. Any idea what is causing this?

Try cleaning the flame sensor with steel wool OR sand paper.

Make sure your gas is cut on at the meter and at the heater. I saw this before. The renter's gas was cut off and locked for non payment; but enough leaked through the shutoff valve to "fire up" and then die out all day long. Learned a big lesson there!
