In mathematical formulation, what does the symbol " ^ " (i.e. carrot) mean?

Usually people use it to mean "raised to the power of." Thus 3^2 means 3 squared, 3^4 means 3 to the fourth power, and 3^-1 means 3 to the minus 1 power. Many spreadsheet programs (like Excel) are compatible with this notation.
