    3x+5y+4.70... what is y?
Mary went to the store and bought 2 sweet potatoes and 3 red peppers for $2.90. Considering the good prices, she returned to the store and bought 1 sweet potato and 2 red peppers for $1.80. How much are the red peppers each?

Your equations aren't what you were supposed to get...

    Take the first sentence only:
    2x + 3y = $2.90

    Taking the second sentence:
    x + 2y = $1.80

    Can you try this now?

    EDIT: Corrected a typo. Changed "2x + 3y = $2.30" to "2x + 3y = $2.90"

Shouldn't the first number sentence be 2x+3y=$2.90?
