I was recently caught shoplifting the valve was only 16dollars n this is my first offense. Never had any other charges.. Just want to know what to do because I don't want this on my record..

It depends entirely on the store and what they want - many these days want a whopping fee to cover court and legal fees, not just restitution. Did they say 'wait for a letter from us?' Was it a chain store?

Were you arrested or given a ticket ?

What did the store say if no police was callled.

Often done one of two ways, many times the store will send a letter asking for 400 to 600 dollars as a civil penalty, and they don't press any charges. ** think of it as legal blackmail.

Or they will press criminal charges, call the police and you have to go to court.

If have to go to court, have an attorney and ask for a first offender program.

Yes I was arrested but I was let go. I have a court appearance tomorrow to get read my charges.. I'm going to her a lawyer because I don't want them to say things I don't understand.. Btw yes its in the USA.. It was in new Jersey..
