When a debt collector buys your old debt, can they get a judgement
If you have an old debt that a debt collector buys, can they legally get a judgement after you.
Can they and the original creditor show it on your credit report at the same time? How long does each of those stay on your credit report. I know it's 7 yrs from the date of late activity. Correct for the creditor. How do you get away from debt collectors doing this to you?

There is a statute of limitations on how long a creditor has to file legal action to recover a debt. Buying the debt from someone else does not restart the clock. So if it is an old debt they cannot start legal proceedings.

However, the debt never expires so they are within their rights to dun you for the debt.

I'm confused. The debt collector got a judgement on us, not the creditor. I'm aware of the sol on the original debt

    Debt and debt collectors
What rights do the debt collector have if within the sol.
Can both companies or more than 1 company come after you for the same debt?

How long can they collect on a judgement in virginia?

Please don't start new threads over the same issue. I've merged yout threads, any follow-up should be posted to this thread.

If they received a judgment then the suit was filed within the SOL. A judgment is good for 20 years and can be renewed for an additional 20
    LIS > Code of Virginia > 8.01-251

Only the owner of the debt or their assigns can collect on it.
