When I open the door the light comes on, but nothing on the control panel is lighting up/working?

You need to check the outlet to see if one leg of power is dead. Otherwise, a safety is blown from it being dirty, most likely. You will need a good digital meter to check that dryer out which can be purchased for about $20 or so at Radio Shack, Lowe's, or Home Depot.
