My mom was a resident of an Ontario nursing home and passed away in 2010. Am I responsible for the debt that was outstanding ? She had no estate at all - and no money in the bank. She owed approximately $6000. I have no money but I am concerned they will file a legal action against me or garnishee my wages. I live in Ontario, Canada.

Did you sign any paper work when she was put in, saying you would pay ?

Hi Fr Chuck - that is the thing - I cannot remember. I know there was a lot of paperwork - she went into the home in May of 2002... I wasn't "officially" her power of attorney, but she had Alzheimer's and whenever the bill would come in I would pay it... after I took over the joint bank account. It has been almost 2 years since she died and since a payment was last made (there were no more CPP and OAS cheques after she died). I have read on other sites about the 2 year limit - do you know if it applies here?
