Failure to register as a sex offender, what will happen?
Last week there was a robbery at a cellular store across the street at our apartment and the following day the police where at the apartment complex asking questions and running everyone's names.

As bad luck would have it a warrant was placed for my boyfriend just that day for failing to register. Last year he was homeless and was unable to check his mail if anything was sent to him.

When I went to visit him a few days later he was telling me he might be let off with a warning since it's his first violation. I know a 3rd degree felony is serious but is it possible to just be released with just a warning?

I don't want to get my hopes up as I know very little about any of this (I have a clean record) but I don't want to be left in the dark. If anyone has any info as to what may happen I'll greatly appreciate it.

It has been over a year and he was not registered, he will be going back to prison, I guess anything is possible but I don't see it happening.

    1. homeless, sorry he still registers from a shelter, has a shelter or someone that gets his mail for him. Homeless people get their welfare cards, food stamps, medicare papers, so all over homeless seem to get mail somehow. The court will assume he did not try

    2. he is not homeless now, so why had he not registered.

A lot may also depend on what his actual crime was to get on the sex register.

He told me he has to register each year around his birthday. I had no idea about him having to inform them of any change of address until earlier today when I did some research on the subject. He has only been living with me for a little over a week though. The sad thing is he was planning on setting up an appointment to get re registered later that day.

I'm not trying to make any excuses for his actions or lack there of I'm just stressed about all of this. I've only been with him for 9 months and the idea of him being locked away for a long time is unbearable. I'm not sure if I can handle something like that.

Sorry for the rant I'm very new to all new to all this.

Please rant, or express yourself, this is hard to deal with and I am sure there are things he was not telling you about this. But remember these laws are taken seriously and are one of the few where they actually send people to check on you in some areas.

Chuck thank you so much for replying to my question on here. He has a court day tomorrow and I'll be able to visit him on Saturday so hopefully I'll find out what is going on

It sounds like he is turning his life around, and that you are good for him, I do wish both of you the best.
