Nitrofurantoin and ampicillin safe during pregnancy?
I am 37 weeks and 5 days pregnant (as of sept 11). According to my Dr's office I have a UTI and another infection (not sure what though). My Dr. prescribed me nitrofurantoin (100mg) 4 times daily starting today (the 10th) and lasting until Wednesday when I am 37w6d. After that she gave me a prescription for ampicillin (250mg) to be taken 4 times daily starting on Thursday when I am 38 weeks. I have been reading up on these meds and I am nervous that if I deliver early or breastfeed with either drug in my system it will harm my baby. I also take one a day prenatals (which I am assuming are safe with these drugs). Are these pills and the dosages safe? I am very nervous for my baby, thank you!

Well the doctor is probably concerned the infection could go into the birth canal too! I would do a search online for unsafe medicines to take while pregnant. But if you can't trust your Doctor, who can you trust? Is he a Ped or Gyn Doctor? Why don't you call the hospital nurse and ask her, she would definitely know and there is probably one on duty all night. Good luck

A "hospital Nurse" isn't going to get involved in this.

If a Physician wrote the prescriptions it would be my opinion that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Those medications are indeed safe during pregnancy.
