4th grade. I try to check her work but sometimes I'm not sure what the answer should be because things have changed over the years and I have been out of school for 25 years.

I understand. Glad to know she's in 4th grade. That's what I thought after 15 years of teaching 4th grade. Post again if she needs help, but make sure she attempts an answer and someone will help.

We always make her do the work and then check behind her. If we feel the problem is wrong we have her explain how she got her answer because things are different in school today than years ago. 99% of the time she is right. She was already in the bed when I looked over her work and thought she was right but not sure. I do appreciate the help, I feel I should know this stuff but I don't.

Sounds like great parenting to me! Don't worry if you don't know the answers. I remember my first day teaching 4th grade. I felt like a complete idiot! Have your daughter bring her math book home. There is usually a short lesson before the practice problems. That will help refresh your memory.

Always try to put the question as it was asked and the attempt to answer it together with the question.

It's really difficult to differentiate the parent from the student asking for someone else to do their homework or their assignment and the attempt always shows the real effort to find the answer.

Most often than not, students know the answer but don't know how to get there and it's through their attempts (they can be failed attempts too, or simple mistakes) that they learn best.
