The workmen in bathroom said it is better to take up the old ceramic mosaic tiles
from 1951 from the bathroom floor. Instead of going over them with the ceramic 12x12 tiles.
I may be wrong but it seems to me the floor as some play in in it. I hope the tiles don't pop up later?

Are you asking About the Cement board... the tile or a flexible floor and how are they all connected?

what your options are depends on what's between the old tile and the sub-floor... more like HOW MUCH as in how thick is it.

If its on a mortar bed you have a lot more options. In my case I ripped it all out, had room for TWO layers of cement board thinseted and screwed to the sub-flooring on top of which I installed the tile. But how much flex and for what reasons its flexing are key.

Ceramic tile and springy floors are a very poor combination.

He already put down the cement board. But to me it seems to be flexible. Is that the way it should be?

Did the sub floor also flex before the cement board was installed? I would not allow any tile installation at this point. What is the sub floor under the cemenr board and how thick. What is the floor joist span

I am sure it is a cement floor,it was always very solid. I was out of the house.
Maybe he put the cement board over the existing tiles. He has been during this type of work for 50 years

Is the house bult on a slab with no basement or crawl space... then it might be a cement floor, if there is a crawlspace or a basement odds are it's a wood floor.

Unless you have a condo in a multilevel building then it might be either.

Yes the house is on a slab. Family Room is a cement floor.
No basement or crawlspace. Wife said he went over the old tile floor with cement board.

With 50 years experience he has apparently given up on any thing invented in the last 50 years. You do not need cement board if you sub is cement. He could have used Schluter-DITRA - Schluter-Systems
