    Modem & Vista
Hello! I recently purchased a Gateway computer that came with Vista Premium. I currently do not have internet at home, but service will start tomorrow. My question is, can you install an external modem (Motorola SB5101) without having the installation cd? I have the modem, but no cd to go with it... Thanks for your help!!

It will be hi-speed internet through cable company..

The cable company said that I could "rent" a modem from them for $3 a month, but I thought I would just buy one.. got one off e-bay, good deal, but does not come with the cd.

The Motorola SB5101 is a cable modem. It can be used with either the USB port (that's the little flat one) or an ethernet port (looks like a phone jack, but a little bit wider) to connect to the computer.

Using the USB connection should work without the CD. If it doesn't, the ethernet connection will work.

Did you clear this with the cable company? Not all cable modems will work with all systems. Also they will probably need to get the MAC address of the modem.
